The Jolly Phonics & Grammar programme is the global leading synthetic phonics and Grammar programme
It is a 7-year program that teaches not only phonics, but continues throughout the primary school years, by extending the earlier phonics teaching with the teaching of spelling, grammar and punctuation concepts (SPaG).
From Jolly Grammar Level 1 for primary 1 to Jolly Grammar Level 6 for primary 6, each level of Jolly Grammar teaching provides continuous revision and consolidation of topics taught in previous years and goes on to teach the core concepts of Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation, starting with simple age-appropriate definitions, which are gradually built on with each year of teaching.
The teaching methodology continues to be multi-sensory with actions and colour coding for parts of speech to help children develop their understanding of how language works.
The systematic programme means children are given the tools that they need to independently write what they want, clearly and with expression.
With spelling, punctuation and grammar (or SPaG) now more prominent in curricula around the world because of the numerous benefits of literacy, it is crucial for all teachers to be above proficient in their grammar skills as they interact with the children in school daily irrespective of the subjects they teach.
The Jolly Phonics and Grammar programme meets the aims of both the UK National Curriculum and the US Common Core State Standards.
“The systematic teaching of spelling, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary is evident in the pupils’ daily writing. The children are able to recognise and use parts of grammar in their reading and writing.”
